Open Letter to Homeopathic Community: Changes to Make

January 2009

Dear Homeopaths,

I propose that we adopt these rules to keep our practice of homeopathy pure:

# 1

The Hering Proving Rule: A "Hahnemann" proving is one conducted with at least one person taking a 5x potency for a toxic substance, and a 3x potency for a non-toxic substance.

# 2

The 1000 Rule: A clinical symptom is one in which a homeopath can say applies to 1,000 cases; and if it did not apply, it is only for an insignificant number of people.

# 3

The Action Rule: A homeopath will identify himself to the community as either:

"Action" homeopath: A homeopath who heals by the Hahnemann model. He prescribes medicines as an unbiased observer. He categorizes his medicines by objective observation and real experience of the action of the medicines in real people.

"Type" homeopath: A homeopath, who prescribes by constitutional, family, miasmatic, chemical table location or other category.

The Hering Proving Rule

In proving remedies, Hering took the 3x potency while the other provers took the 30c and above. Hering could then weed out the irrelevant mental symptoms from the other provers. Subsequent provings did not always follow likewise. This rule remands those provings after Hering or Boericke to pass the Hering Proving Rule by having at least one person take the 3x or 5x and to resubmit the proving.

Dream provings are invalid due to moon substance. In astrology, when everyone acts in the same way, this is a moon transit. When the moon is in Capricorn, we think business; when in Taurus, we think gardening. Collectively, the provers' symptoms are skewed by the moon. See Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." In the provings with mostly "mental" symptoms, outer planet transits and location astrology (provers live in one area) likewise render the proving incomplete, therefore invalid without the additional step Hering took.

The 1000 Rule

(...Synchronicity, the Doctrine of Signatures and Fables.)

Synchronicity is a fact of healing and of life. The Doctor Inside speaks in the language of the provings, as well as the language of synchronicity-a homeopath must not mix up the two languages. We need to apply the 1000 Rule to keep synchronicities out of clinical reports and to keep our literature pure.

Carl Jung's Synchronicity

From the "Collected Works", On Synchronicity

Carl Jung wrote how a patient was not progressing in therapy because she was "psychologically inaccessible" as "her excellent education had provided her with a weapon ideally suited to this purpose, namely a highly polished Cartesian rationalism with an impeccably "geometrical" idea of reality" for which she "had sealed herself."

"Well, I was sitting opposite her one day, with my back to the window, listening to her flow of rhetoric. She had had an impressive dream the night before, in which someone had given her a golden scarab-a costly piece of jewelry. While she was still telling me this dream, I heard something behind me gently tapping on the window. I turned round and saw that it was a fairly large flying insect that was knocking against the windowpane from outside in the obvious effort to get into the dark room. This seemed to me very strange. I opened the window immediately and caught the insect in the air as it flew in. It was a scarabaeid beetle, or common rose-chafer (Cetonia aurata), whose gold-green color most nearly resembles that of a golden scarab. I handed the beetle to my patient with the words, "Here is your scarab."

"The experience punctured the desired hole in her rationalism and broke the ice of her intellectual resistance. The treatment could now be continued with satisfactory results."

Jung's story describes how the Doctor Inside communicates to both the doctor and patient, using synchronicity to direct a healing. What exactly did the Doctor Inside say? "Give the scarab beetle remedy." or "I will show you a synchronicity to puncture your carnal mind." The homeopath must know the difference. He cannot assume, if the scarab beetle medicine helped his patient, then he can write about it would be for every patient.

The Doctrine of Signatures, Hahnemann rejected. To prescribe using signatures, fables, and the table of elements is the language of synchronicity- not one of provings and 1000 observations. Such language but compromises our books and software.

New homeopaths must learn thoroughly the action of drugs. See the difference between Veratrum and Veratrum Viride (Click here) which is the Old Masters' actual experience in virulent fevers like typhoid and malaria. These two drug actions are vastly different. Yet under fables, signatures and the table of elements, they are the same. Would anyone want to miss, whether to give Veratrum or Veratrum Viride, in someone dying?

The Action Rule

After the Old Masters, like Hering and Lippe, the education of homeopathy has lost its salt. Homeopaths have left off studying the action of drugs to study constitutional types, essence types, miasmatic types, chemical types, animal types. Types...types...types.

Hahnemann understood and taught the action of drugs. He could differentiate between Mercurius Solubilis, Mercurius Corrosivus, Mercurius Dulcis, Mercurius Aceticus, Mercurius Praecipitatus Ruber. (See Samuel Hahnemann, Chronic Diseases, last footnote in "Syphilis.") We may not all agree on the few Mercurius medicines best to use for our practice, but can we not agree that-what Arnica is to first-aid, Mercurius is to chronic diseases? Hahnemann's knowledge of the Mercurius remedies are not being passed on, neither the Hellebore (Veratrum) remedies for pandemics-real arsenal in the defeat of death and dying. Hahnemann left these treasures. It is our heritage.

To give the public full disclosure, I ask that our advertisements for conferences and literature identify whether the teacher is an Action or Type homeopath. I ask that our homeopathic organizations in their lists on "how to find a homeopath" identify a homeopath as-Action or Type. Beginning students need to know. Consider for a moment, the fact that the majority of students, once they begin practice, drop out from case failures. Then have compassion on the new student's search and path for the methods that work.

Furthermore, the education of homeopaths must include:

1. The reading of Hahnemann's casework-so the new homeopath learns how he observed the medicines to work in people without bias.

2. The reading of Boenninghausen's casework-to learn how he managed cases with efficiency and consistency.

Constantine Hering, MD

In his last address to the profession 1880:

"If our school ever gives up the strict inductive method of Hahnemann, we are lost, and deserve to be mentioned only as a caricature in the history of medicine."
